What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to help correct a deviated septum.  During surgery, the surgeon has to carve thin layers of bone and cartilage along the nasal septum.  This allows the surgeon to straighten and reposition the septum on the inside of the nose.

What are some of the reasons someone might have septoplasty?

Most patients who undergo septoplasty have some difficulty breathing properly through the nose.  When the septum is deviated, that means it is shifted away from the center of the nose.  This typically can cause a blockage inside the nose.  The goal of septoplasty is to help straighten a deviated septum.  This typically helps improve nasal airflow.

Is nasal packing required after septoplasty?

The need for things like packing and splints is determined by the surgeon performing your procedure.  In our practice, Dr. Goyal uses some dissolvable stitches inside the nose.  Packing or splints are typically not used.

How long is the recovery after septoplasty?

Every case is unique, but most patients find the first week of recovery to be the toughest.

What should most people expect during recovery after septoplasty?

Most patients will have some nasal drainage, some oozing, and lots of nasal stuffiness.  There is some pressure and discomfort, but most patients do not have severe pain after surgery.  Most patients do not have severe pain if packing or splints are not used after surgery.

Is septoplasty covered by insurance?

Septoplasty is typically covered by medical insurance if the procedure is being performed to help improve the function of the nose.  Each insurance plan has different policies, so it would be important to check your specific plan's policies regarding coverage for septoplasty.

I had septoplasty and was told that my septum is still deviated.  Is that typical?

Even after surgery, it is unlikely for the septum to be "perfectly" straight. There are usually some areas that can be curved or bent even after surgery.

It is important to remember that this does not mean that more surgery is necessary. A minor deviation after surgery may not need any further treatment.
